India is a perfect place for wildlife enthusiasts. It has got many wild animals, birds, aquatic animals and different other kinds of floral beauty which is specific to this country only. A number of exotic animal species which are not found anywhere else in the world can be seen in India. Today in this article, we are going to look at some of such species which are rare to this country.
RARE SPECIES FOUND IN INDIA
Dugong
You have seen cows grazing on land but have you ever seen cows in the water? The dugong is a vegetarian mammal which is also called sea cows and is found in the Indian Ocean. There is a worry about their numbers as per a report of 2013, there are only 250 sea cows left in the country.
Snow Leopard
It is one of the scariest wild animals which is found in India and is a member of the cat family living in the extremely cold climates. In the past few years, their numbers have increased in the country. They can be spotted in the snowy mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.
Himalayan Tahr
It belongs to a wild goat family and can be spotted in the snowy mountains of the Himalayas. Due to the gradual loss of their habitat and their killing, poaching has decreased their numbers to a great extent and they are now included in the ‘near threatened’ list of animal species.
Red Panda
Everyone loves these cute animals. In India, you can spot them in the Kanchenjunga National Park, Singalila National Park, Neora Valley and a few other protected areas. Due to increased activities like trekking and other such adventurous activities and deforestation, these animals have also become endangered.
Indian Flying Fox
Don’t confuse this animal with any fox. It is a bat which resembles the looks of a fox. They can be spotted in the swamps and some tropical areas of the country.
Nilgiri Marten
This is another unique species which is found in the country. They are famous for yellow coloured patches which are present on their neck. It is a mammal and is a carnivore which is mostly found in the Western Ghats region.
Himalayan Brown Bear
This wild animal is also endangered. It can be spotted only in Pakistan and India after becoming extinct in Bhutan. They can be spotted in National Parks of Himachal Pradesh and rarely in Ladakh region.
Chiru
This is another endangered species which is found in the country, especially in the Ladakh region. Due to this, they are provided with special protection to save their numbers.
Malabar Giant Squirrel
This is another rare species found in the country. It is known for its cream, black and purple colour blend which makes it very attractive. Their length is up to 3 feet but then also, spotting them is a difficult task. One more special fact about them is that unlike other squirrels who use the land as storage houses, these squirrels store their food on treetops.
