Moving into a new house is always a challenge. Even if the house were on the same street it would still be a stressful time. And being organized to make sure it goes well is a must.
Now imagine what it takes to move across the country. The challenges are doubled and stress is off the charts. As with any move, the more prepared and organized you are, the smoother the process will go. There is a lot that goes into the move so it does take more thought behind what to do.
In this article, we will go over what you need to do to make sure that your cross-country move goes as planned.
1 – Have a rental lined up
The one thing that can be counted on with absolute certainty is that things are going to take longer than expected. This is why you should have a short-term rental lined up at your destination.
It is a very real possibility that you will arrive in town before your furniture and other possessions. If you don’t have a place to stay lined up then you will be without the essentials in your new home.
Not only that but getting the place set up usually takes longer. And there is also the possibility of something essential not working like the electricity or internet. Having a place to stay like downtown Toronto apartments for a month or so is a great way to avoid any headaches if things don’t go exactly as planned.
2 – Downsize
The less that you have to move across the country the better. It’s a great idea to get rid of a lot of stuff that you are holding onto when it can easily be replaced later. A move is a perfect opportunity to start fresh.
Take some time to go through everything you were thinking of packing along and make some tough choices. If it is an article of clothing that hasn’t been worn in years then it might be better off going to goodwill.
The same should go for any items that have been sitting in a basement or closet. This is also a good chance to make a few extra dollars by selling things at a yard sale.
3 – Hire a company vs DIYl
Although the logistics are more complicated when hiring a company, the process is much easier than doing it yourself. Loading a van or truck with precision is not easy for somebody not doing it for a living. And driving a big truck for thousands of miles is also not for the feint of heart.
There are people who would rather not pay so much for a mover. They also would rather arrive at the same time as their stuff which doesn’t usually happen when traveling separately from the professional movers. At the same time, driving across the country is very stressful and the risk of an accident is high.
There are pros and cons to each scenario so weigh the differences carefully.
