The human body is made up of about 60 percent of water, and it is essential to the growth and development of every cell. Recent research conducted by the British Psychological Society discovered that students who came into an exam with water scored higher than others who did not come with water.

To stay hydrated enough, you will need to drink water regularly. Staying hydrated helps quell anxiety, stay calm, improve memory, improve thinking capacity, as well as maintain your level of motivation.

1. Staying hydrated helps in preventing dry mouth

Regular intake of water helps in keeping your lips and throat moist and prevents your mouth from always feeling dry. This is because dry mouth causes an unpleasant taste, promotes cavities and bad breath.

 2. Staying hydrated improves cardiovascular health

One of the effects of dehydration is that it lowers your body’s blood volume. As a result, your heart will need to work harder to pump the amount of blood that has been reduced and get sufficient oxygen to your cells, hence make your daily activities like exercising, walking upstairs, and others more difficult.

3. Staying hydrated helps to keep your body cool.

The human body releases heat by expanding blood vessels located close to the skin’s surface. This further explains why your face often becomes red during exercise which results in increased blood flow and then heat is dissipated. On the other hand, when you are dehydrated, your body will require a higher environmental temperature to stimulate your blood vessels to widen. As a result, you will stay hotter.

4. Staying hydrated helps your joints and muscles work better.

Once you are well hydrated, the water inside and outside the cells of your body’s contracting muscles provide sufficient nutrients and eliminates waste efficiently which helps to improve your overall body performance. Additionally, staying hydrated also helps in lubricating joints. 

Although their beliefs that muscle cramps are not related to dehydration, it however can cause muscle fatigue.

5. Staying hydrated keeps your skin supple

Once you are highly dehydrated, your skin becomes less elastic. Unlike dry skin which is often as a result of exposure to hot air, soap, and hot water, dehydration makes your skin less elastic. However, it is important to note that staying very hydrated might not prevent body wrinkles that come due to aging.

6. Staying hydrated helps in cleansing your body both inside and outside

For your kidney to effectively filter waste from your body and give it out via urine, it will require adequate water intake.

Staying hydrated also helps in preventing kidney stones and urinary tract infections. If your body becomes severely dehydrated, it may cause your kidney to stop working, hence causing toxins to accumulate your body.

Signs of Dehydration

There are several effects of dehydration on the body. If you do not drink adequate water, your body will not have enough fluid work properly. That said, your urine can be an indicator that your body does not have sufficient water to operate effectively. If you notice your urine is amber or dark yellow, it means you are dehydrated. However, if your urine is light yellow or colorless, then you are hydrated.

Here are other ways you can use to know if you are dehydrated:

  • Dry mouth    
  • Little or no urine
  • Urine that is darker than usual
  • Fatigue or sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Severe thirst
  • Confusion
  • Lightheadedness or Dizziness
  • Lack of tears when crying

Overall, those who embark on vigorous exercises stand a higher risk of being dehydrated. Also, older people and those suffering from some medical conditions like a bladder infection and kidney stones tend to get dehydrated easily.

Additionally, pregnant and breastfeeding women also stand a risk of becoming dehydrated easily.
